Sangam 2008
Date: 12th Sept,
2008 Venue- Rabindra Mandap,BBSR
On the 12th of September Art Vision
presented the 4th dance festival called SANGAM, A CONFLUENCE OF DANCE. The
festival has been conceived as an offering of new and exclusive
choreographic compositions in two different dance styles. Every year two
styles of dance come together on the same platform to showcase recent and
innovative works. While Odissi is a constant factor, the other classical
style varies every year. This year besides Odissi presented by Art Vision,
the festival showcased Manipuri dance by Anjika troupe, directed by renown
dancer and choreographer Priti Patel.
Art Vision, founded in the year 1996 by Padmashree Dr.Ileana Citaristi along
with a group of artists belonging to different disciplines such as dance,
music, painting and literature, has already organized several events which
reflects its multidisciplinary nature. Among these is the Kalinga Mahotsav,
a National Festival of Martial Arts, organized in collaboration with Orissa
Tourism at Dheuli Stupa, since 2003. The performing unit of Art Vision has
already presented dance performances in many prestigious festivals and
conferences in India and abroad. The repertoire of the troupe consists of
original compositions and dance-dramas choreographed by Dr Ileana Citaristi,
who is a senior disciple of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra.
Anjika was founded by Priti Patel in Kolkata to impart training and
expertise in the Manipuri dance form as a school, has dual curriculum: it is
a school for Manipuri dance and is also a school for Movement Therapy for
children suffering from cerebral palsy. Anjika has performed in several
prestigious dance shows all over the world and has won a number of laurels
and accolades for itself. Priti Patel, has herself, received innumerable
awards in appreciation of her work and excellence in this dance form.
The program presented this year by Art Vision included among others, a
specially choreographed item titled “Mahanadi…and the river flows”, an ode
to the great river, cradle of Orissa culture.
The production presented by Anjika is “Malem-Prithvi”, an ode to Mother
Earth and its beautiful creation. In this work Priti Patel used extensively
movements of the martial art of Manipuri, Thang-Ta along with the classical
movements of the Manipuri dance style.
